Earn More, Save More

If you're a professional truck driver who is paid by the mile, by the load, by the drop or any other performance measure -- and the recent winter storms affected not only your ability to travel but your paycheck -- you know first-hand the problems associated with trading time for money. Some truckers were stranded for two days (link) and others were relieved to be off the road (link) during the January 2014 storm! This week, another winter storm affected the eastern USA.

We understand completely. We documented how in December 2009, Mike had to park his truck until the weather cleared a bit from a winter storm. We've had to shut down our truck numerous times over the years due to inclement weather.

Then there is our friend Charles. In addition to driving a truck Monday through Friday, he also works on Saturdays and Sundays. He works 7 days a week, but he can't get ahead financially. He's burning himself out and, frankly, he has no escape plan. Chances are good that unless he makes a decision to change, he'll be stuck trading time for money for the rest of his life.

What about you? Do you have something to fall back on in case you're hurt on the job or forced to retire from the trucking industry? Do you have a retirement plan in place -- or are you winging it?
