Important Notice

A Couple of Changes We received criticism some time back about our blog content including articles covering trouble that truckers got into. Vicki responded in part, "Perhaps we expect for our readers to 'connect the dots' when we post some articles to our blog." To help our readers "connect the dots" regarding news about truckers who face money-draining situations, we've decided to highlight one article from our Truckers' Savings Blog since our last email newsletter in a new section entitled "Prevent This!" Prevent This! On November 8 through our Truckers' Savings Blog, we posted an article about how a New York couple who was seriously injured in a four-vehicle accident filed a 20-count civil suit against the driver of a tractor-trailer (and others). The trucker was accused of: negligence for operating his truck, knowing his truck had a faulty or hazardous braking system, knowing his truck had improperly functioning mechanical equipment, and failing to operate the truck in a safe manner. You as a professional truck driver can help prevent accidents like this. How? FMCSR § 392.7 states (emphasis added), "No commercial motor vehicle shall be driven unless the driver is satisfied that the following parts and accessories are in good working order,...." Always do a thorough pre-trip inspection on your truck. It is your right and responsibility as the driver to put your truck out of service if it is unsafe to drive. If you're a company driver, don't rationalize that since the truck isn't yours, your trucking company can do necessary truck maintenance when they get around to it. No! You are the one who will be driving the truck, no one else. You are the one who must be satisfied that the truck is safe to drive, no one else. Stand your ground. Do not feel intimidated or bullied by any driver manager, dispatcher or shop foreman. Even if you miss a load or two, at least you won't be facing the aftermath of a preventable accident and other related ramifications. Earn More, Save More An October 27, 2014 article stated, "Walmart Stores Inc., the nation’s biggest retailer and operator of one of its biggest truck fleets, is using radio ads to appeal to qualified truck drivers with an offer of a $76,000 salary plus benefits to join the company. That’s far above the national average trucker pay of around $50,000." As good as $76,000 may seem to many truck drivers, how does it compare to what wages should be, had they kept up with inflation based on the weekly income of $500 in 1977, as documented on our inflation calculator page? Using the CPI Inflation Calculator, $500 in 1977 has the same "buying power" as $1,922.09 in 2013. If you multiply that weekly wage by 50 weeks per year, truckers should be earning $96,104.50 per year! And that doesn't even include a raise. It is only what wages should be if they had kept up with inflation. Are you earning that much per year, trucker? Would you like to earn more?
