Prevent This!

A July 7, 2015, article revealed that a truck driver "took his eyes off the road to take a drink of coffee", which led to a predictable series of events:

  • the tires on the right side of the truck went off the shoulder;
  • the driver lost control of his truck;
  • the tractor trailer "went off ... the highway and down over an embankment";
  • the truck jackknifed and became wedged where it landed;
  • the fuel tanks were damaged, which resulted in a fuel spill; and.
  • the driver was issued a "traffic summons" for "Failure to Maintain Designated Lane", which is a violation.

A few moments of distracted driving in order to get a drink led to a totally preventable truck accident.

What this article doesn't say is whether or not the trucker will have to pay for any of the physical damage done. We are aware of at least one trucking company that self insures. When one of their truckers is involved in an accident, the trucker must pay the first $500, even if it has to be deducted out of his/her paycheck a little at a time.

Although drinking coffee isn't eating while driving, the premise of "consumption" while driving is the same.

If you feel that you need to eat or drink anything while driving, the safest course of action is to park your truck safely and legally first.

Earn More, Save More

Since our last email newsletter, Vicki has found a couple of articles addressing pay for professional truck drivers:

  1. An article in the Los Angeles Times gave numerous reasons "[why] paying truckers by the mile is unfair and dangerous". Here's an eye-opening quote:

    "While the simple answer is to pay drivers by the hour instead of by the distance traveled, carriers are reluctant to do so because it would mean a dislocation of their business model, which dates to the 1930s when the trucking industry looked very different than it does today. President Franklin D. Roosevelt exempted trucking from the Fair Labor Standards Act, which mandated a minimum wage."

  2. The author of an article on FleetOwner.com correctly pointed out:

    "Pay-by-the-mile forces too much of a fleet's operational uncertainties onto the driver even though the driver has no control over them."

    The author further indicated that it might not be too long before drivers start getting paid by the hour.

Even if you were paid by the hour to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle, you would still be trading time for money. Do you think your time is more valuable than that?

Isn't it time to start thinking about earning a second income from the cab of your truck during your off-duty hours? If so...
