Prevent This!

A September 8, 2015, article opened with this description: "Police say the driver of a milk tanker truck was choking on a soft drink when he drove off a Pennsylvania highway and crashed into 23 new cars on a dealership lot."

The source article stated that:

  • the trucker was not injured;
  • damage was done to 23 new cars and another inside the car dealership's showroom;
  • no attempt had been made to stop the truck;
  • no mechanical problems with the truck were found; and
  • the trucker was "cited for careless driving."

The driver simply "began choking on a sip of Dr Pepper, causing him to lose control of the rig."

Drinking a beverage that is carbonated -- and hence "fizzy" -- can cause "tickles" or a "burning" sensation in the back of one's throat, potentially increasing the likelihood of coughing or choking.

From a health and wellness perspective, the wise consumer will strongly consider drinking water instead of soda pop, cola or soft drinks (but preferably not while driving).

Was drinking this beverage worth:

  • the cost of the damage to the truck, other vehicles and a building?
  • a "careless driving" citation (and other related legal costs)?
  • this accident being put on the trucker's driving record or motor vehicle record?
  • this accident needing to be disclosed on applications the trucker may submit for other trucking jobs?

Clearly, no.

The trucker may not have been thinking about all of that before he took a sip. But now you know.

You can prevent this kind of trucking accident by not eating while driving -- or drinking.

Earn More, Save More

The numbers are in.

According to Figure 9 in a report from the ATRI (American Transportation Research Institute), fully two-thirds (67.4%) of truckers surveyed reported a decrease in pay due to the 34-hour restart provision in the 2013 change to the Hours of Service regulation.

The figure also shows the breakdown by percentage of how great an impact this change made on surveyed truckers' wages.

While the Hours of Service regulation protects truckers from being run ragged by unscrupulous trucking companies, it also restricts the amount of money that truckers can earn.

As long as there are caps on your ability to earn money, you'll never be able to earn an unlimited amount.

Isn't it time to start considering earning a second income from the cab of your truck during your off-duty hours?
