  • Focus on October and November Money Saving Topics for Truckers

    In November, we've been looking at money saving tips and asking questions about Tools and Equipment and Truck Parts.

    In December, we'll be pleased to focus on Tricks of the Trade.

  • We're Updating Our Forms

    Much to our chagrin, the program that we purchased through which we were running some forms on our site became unstable and the "fix" from the developer isn't working.

    Fortunately, we have found a service through which we can run forms. We'll be updating the ones that need to be updated.

  • Apps Are Coming

    We're making plans to have apps for our site. Because of the forms situation, we've had to postpone the launch of our apps. We hope to have these functional by early 2016.

  • Periscope to Help Truckers Save Money?

    According to Wikipedia, "Periscope is a live video streaming app for iOS and Android..." Now that we have new Smartphones and installed this app, we are eager to use it to connect with others.

    We think it would be both fun and educational for all of us to host scopes about saving money in trucking. What do you think?

Prevent This!

On November 9, we read an article that opened with this paragraph:

Police are looking for help identifying a truck driver who hit a 30-foot tree and dragged it for miles, hitting telephone poles and taking out more than a dozen mailboxes and a stop sign along the way, authorities said.

Details about this include:

  • that it happened just after 1 a.m.;
  • the tree was 10-to-14 inches in diameter before it was snapped off at the base; and
  • the tree was "stuck on the truck" and "dragged 2.3 miles".

Even though it was dark at 1 a.m., we believe that it was impossible for the trucker not to know that:

  • his/her rig hit a tree that large;
  • there was "resistance" due to dragging the tree and hitting objects along the way; and
  • there was a sudden "freeing" of that resistance when the tree dislodged from the truck.

We speculate that the rig had to have been damaged due to hitting the tree and that eventually, the trucker will be caught and fined.

Prevent this! Every trucker needs to know his/her truck's turning radius and watch the truck's mirrors to make sure that all objects in the truck's path have been cleared. (Remember your serpentine training!)

In case you need a reminder of why this is important, here is video footage of a trucker who failed to clear objects when making a right turn in January 2015 in "the Los Angeles neighborhood of Van Nuys".

Professional truck driver Mike Simons says that if he ever has doubt about where he is going, he pulls up the "satellite view" within Google Maps on his computer or Smartphone to see a site's location from above. Sometimes, being able to see a shipper's or receiver's docking situation can be incredibly helpful.

If a trucker ever has doubt regarding clearing objects in his/her trucks's path, the wisest thing to do is "get out and look".

"Wearable technology would allow fleets and law enforcement to monitor fatigue on a real-time basis, as well as permit things such as alcohol/drug detection, insulin levels for diabetics, body health data from sleep apnea sufferers, etc.," he said. "Yet it is privacy and legal issues that will need to be addressed with that; we’re years away from capabilities like that, even if they are ever allowed."

Earn More, Save More

Trucking industry news has been jammed of late with articles about the economy and trucker pay.

  • An October 30, 2015 article by FleetOwner.com that said that "the freight market – indeed, the U.S. economy as a whole – finds itself on far shakier ground than many predicted a little over a month ago, though some believe the slowing pace of cargo transport demand is only a temporary situation."
    We find it odd that this article was published during the big Christmas shipping season.

  • On October 13, The Wall Street Journal published an article that stated, "Average pay for long-haul truckers jumped 17% since the end of 2013 to a record $57,000 this year..."
    Frankly, we have yet to find a single trucker whose income has increased 17% in the last two years.
    And even if that was true, what is to prevent income from decreasing again, or being hit by inflation or a recession...?

  • On November 12, FleetOwner.com published an article that indicated that the chances that there will be a recession over the next 3 years is gaining momentum.

  • On October 24, WISC-TV ran an article on their website that said that "retired truck drivers could see their pension checks cut in half". A named retiree had been told that "he should brace for a 60% cut" in benefits and that at age 74, he was going to "have to try to find some work".
    How would you like to retire from trucking -- thinking that your financial future was secure -- only to have that rug ripped out from underneath you?

Doesn't it make sense to have a second income to help offset jolts to trucker pay due to winter weather, seasonal work, the economy and workplace injuries?

Would having residual income that can survive both good and bad economic times -- and could one day replace your trucker's income -- help you?
