  Do not purposely drive into hazardous situations.
  
  Monitor weather conditions year-round and if necessary, park in a safe location until conditions improve.
  
  Remember that each trucker has to determine if it is safe to drive his or her big rig and if his or her commercial motor vehicle is roadworthy.

What can you do if you are delayed by circumstances beyond your control -- such as by natural disasters including wildfires, flooding, high winds, etc.?

In the USA, the autumnal equinox will occur on Tuesday, September 22.

Following that date (until the spring equinox in 2021), there will be more hours of darkness than light.

If you have not already done so, prepare yourself and your truck for cooler temperatures.

In some places, laws regarding carrying snow chains are already in effect.

If this will be your first winter driving season, learn from veteran truckers how best to navigate the roads.

If you're an OTR trucker, you'll want to have some warmer or winter clothing with you -- as well as the means by which to stay warm in your truck when you're sleeping (perhaps by having and using an insulated sleeping bag).
