- Practice Looking and Planning Ahead
Certain personality types find it easier to look and plan ahead, so to help all truckers, here are some helpful examples:
Example #1: When you're thinking of the next place to take on fuel, consider what other tasks you can do at that truck stop (but not while you're parked in the fuel island).
Can you get a shower and eat a meal there so that you don't have to break those up into separate stops?
Obvious exceptions to this are:
- when you have scheduling issues and need to roll; or
- when you definitely plan to get a shower and eat a meal at a place farther down the road: or
- after you have made a time-sensitive pick-up or delivery.
Example #2: Be in touch with your driver manager before you deliver the load you're under to arrange your next pre-planned load.
That way, you can hopefully stay "loaded and rolling" and can be thinking of your route and stops you need to make along the way.
If you're driving for an irregular route carrier, remember that sometimes short runs can lead to long ones.
Example #3: When you're parked at a truck stop, do what is reasonable to protect yourself and your rig from theft.
Don't be paranoid, but keep your truck doors locked, keep a reliable lock on your trailer doors, and park in places where it won't be easy for thieves to break in and steal.
Example #4: Set some money aside from every paycheck for things in the future.
If you're an owner-operator or independent trucker, you'll want to make sure that you set aside money from every paycheck so that you're not caught unprepared for:
- taxes, when tax time rolls around; or
- big truck maintenance expenses, should those occur.
Also, if you budget your money well, you'll be able to save some money for things like these:
- a dream come true,
- investments,
- retirement, or
- pleasurable things for you (or if you have a home support team, someone back home).

Truck and truck driver detention is back in the news, according to a July 7, 2021, article, which stated:
The DOT Office of Inspector General (OIG) reports that for-hire truck drivers lose between $1.1 billion and $1.3 billion a year to time spent in detention, reducing their annual earnings by $1,281 to $1,534 per year, according to findings from an Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association Foundation (OOIDA) survey.
Back in 2019, I wrote Comments to FMCSA on Detention and gave some interesting food for thought at the end.
In the meantime, if you're going to be stuck in a dock (or a series of docks) for a while -- and if you're going to go off-duty -- consider how you could put that time to good use by earning a second income.
