TDMST Weekly Round-Up 2025.08.23 is the trucking commentary on news affecting professional truck drivers for the week ending August 23, 2025, written by Vicki Simons.

I welcome your comments, thoughts and feedback on the items of your choice below.

TDMST Weekly Round-Up

1. Regarding immigration, language, non-domiciled CDLs, and qualifications:

The topics in this section are in some way related to the fatal crash that happened when an illegal alien driving a large truck attempted to make an illegal u-turn in Florida on Tuesday, August 12, according to this article.

DAT TruckersEdge - Most Loads. Best Rates. Serving Owner-Operators Since 1978. 10% off your first 12 months. New customers only.

I express my deep sympathy — and offer my condolences — to the families of those whose loved ones died in this crash.

It brings me no joy after people have died to underscore the importance of the need for all drivers in the USA — not just truckers — to be able to read, write, and speak English since road signs are all in English.

2. Regarding inspections and weather:

Inspections

If you keep yourself and your rig in perpetual readiness for an inspection, you’ll never be caught off-guard.

Weather

Be on your guard whenever and wherever weather turns nasty.

If you need to wait for conditions to improve or take a different route, then please bear in mind that you are the “captain of your ship” (truck) and only you can determine if conditions are safe enough in which to drive.

3. Regarding economy, employment, freight charges, tariffs, and trade:

Economy

Employment

Freight charges

The first article in this section says:

The National Motor Freight Traffic Association’s Digital LTL Council has launched the Preliminary Freight Charges API Standard, which will give carriers, shippers, and 3PLs visibility into freight charges before invoices are issued.

Tariffs

Trade

4. Regarding bridges, crashes, drugs, fatalities, fire, fraud, hit and run, road rage, and theft:

Bridges

The first article in this section says:

Drivers can expect a 38 mile detour outside of Tacoma after a semi truck struck a bridge, forcing officials to shut it down. …

According to Fox 13, the semi truck struck several support beams on the White River Bridge and came to a stop blocking SR 410 in both directions.

If this was an oversized truck, did the trucker have the necessary permit, routing, and even a pilot vehicle?

Crashes

Please look through these articles to see if there is anything you can learn to help you prevent being involved in a similar crash.

Drugs

Never ever haul or take illegal drugs.

Fatalities

I express my deep sympathy — and offer my condolences — to the families of those whose loved ones died in these crashes.

Can you learn anything from the articles below that would help prevent being involved in a fatal large truck crash?

Fire

It seems to me that there are a lot more truck fires than there used to be and I wonder if that is because more electric trucks with lithium batteries are in use.

In the case of the first article in this section, I saw the video and it appeared as though the trailer was on fire.

Was that a brake fire?

Fraud

Never attempt to deceive, misrepresent something, intentionally pervert the truth, or pretend to be someone else for the purpose of trying to get something valuable.

Hit and run

Running after a vehicle crash is a cowardly thing to do.

Road rage

Seek to avoid road rage incidents.

Theft

Never take something that doesn’t belong to you unless you have permission from the owner.

With as much surveillance equipment as is in place in the 21st century, it’s only a matter of time before the thieves are apprehended.

5. Regarding brokers, business, cold chain, and recalls:

Brokers

Business

Cold chain

Recalls

If your tractor or trailer is under a recall, please have the work attended to as soon as possible.

6. Regarding automation, technology, and tires:

Automation

Although a bit related, automation here is different from autonomous driving.

Technology

Tires

7. Regarding autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles, emissions, EPA, fuel, and oil:

Autonomous vehicles

I most adamantly oppose the operation of self-driving, autonomous, or driverless commercial motor vehicles on the same roads as the motoring public — but I share articles on this topic with our readers to help us stay current on the topic.

Electric vehicles

Before you buy an all-electric Commercial Motor Vehicle, please do your due diligence by asking some questions and getting answers.

Emissions

This issue falls right in the crosshairs of the “federal government versus states rights” argument.

EPA

Oil

8. Regarding containers and ports:

12. Regarding awards, awards – recognition, and driver appreciation:

Awards

I applaud all professional truck drivers who compete in truck driving championships!

Congratulations to all winners and Driver of the Year finalists!

Awards – recognition

I recognize those who helped truckers — and truckers who helped others — who needed help in a time of need.

Driver appreciation

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (NTDAW) is scheduled to take place September 14-20, 2025.

Be on the lookout for freebies and discounts.

I wish you — and all professional truck drivers — safe travels and lots of money saving opportunities on the road.
