Was there anything else noteworthy about your fuel island experience?:
The photo shows the condition of the squeegee, where the scrubber had come loose.
Also, the rubber part did not work effectively to remove windshield wash water from my windshield.

The state of the squeegee — with a torn ‘scrubber’ — at a fuel bay at the Pilot in Albany, Georgia.
You can see that the foam pad is not in such good shape either.
The rubber blade did not allow me to get good clean swipe on my windshield, even when the scrubber was not under the blade.
