TDMST Weekly Round-Up 2025.06.14

TDMST Weekly Round-Up 2025.06.14 is the trucking commentary on news affecting professional truck drivers for the week ending June 14, 2025, written by Vicki Simons.

I welcome your comments, thoughts and feedback on the items of your choice below.

TDMST Weekly Round-Up

1. Regarding inspections, language, and protests:

Inspections

If you keep yourself and your rig in perpetual readiness for an inspection, you’ll never be caught off-guard.

DAT TruckersEdge - Most Loads. Best Rates. Serving Owner-Operators Since 1978. 10% off your first 12 months. New customers only.

Language

For the sake of safety, navigation, and following directions, every professional truck driver in a country needs to be able to read, write, and speak the language of that country.

Protests

Please be aware of the Hobbs Act:

18 U.S. Code § 1951 – Interference with commerce by threats or violence

(a)Whoever in any way or degree obstructs, delays, or affects commerce or the movement of any article or commodity in commerce, by robbery or extortion or attempts or conspires so to do, or commits or threatens physical violence to any person or property in furtherance of a plan or purpose to do anything in violation of this section shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.

While this is a matter for attorneys and judges to decide, in my opinion, any action by people on a road that “shuts down” or “completely stops” commerce is a violation of federal law and the perpetrators need to be held responsible for their actions.

2. Regarding fee, future, rates, statistics, and tolls:

Fee

The article in this section opens with:

A provision that would create a new $100 annual fee on motor carriers was left out of the Senate Commerce Committee’s budget reconciliation proposal.

It’s an omission that the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association lauded. The organization, which represents small-business truckers, opposed the House Transportation and Infrastructure’s version of the budget proposal over the “unnecessary” fee.

Future

Typically, we see prognostications about the future of the trucking industry toward the end of one calendar year or the beginning of a new one.

Predictions may also take place near the mid-point of a calendar year or toward the close of a quarter.

Rates

Statistics

I have grouped a number of articles that cover numbers in this section.

Tolls

When I first saw an article about how Pennsylvania was ripping up toll booths, I wondered if the tolls were going away as well. Nope!

What if someone traveling a toll road in that state does not have an electronic sensor?

Neither of the articles in this section about that tolling system says.

3. Regarding bankruptcy, business, DHL, DOT, employment, strike, and recalls:

Bankruptcy

Business

DHL

DOT

Employment

Strike

Recalls

If your tractor or trailer is under a recall, please have the work attended to as soon as possible.

4. Regarding autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles, emissions, fuel, fuel economy, oil, and TRUs:

Autonomous vehicles

I definitely oppose the operation of self-driving, autonomous, or driverless commercial motor vehicles on the same roads as the motoring public — but I share articles on this topic with our readers to help us stay current on the topic.

Electric vehicles

Before you buy an all-electric Commercial Motor Vehicle, please do your due diligence by asking some questions and getting answers.

Emissions

Fuel

Fuel economy

Feel free to read the post on this site:

Oil

TRUs

According to the article, TRU stands for:
Transport refrigeration unit.

For more trucking terms, please see the glossary.

5. Regarding crashes, deaths, drugs, fraud, scam, smuggling, theft, and violence:

Crashes

Please look through these articles to see if there is anything you can learn to help you prevent being involved in a similar crash.

Deaths

I express my deep sympathy — and offer my condolences — to the family of the trucker who died.

Drugs

Never ever haul or take illegal drugs.

Fraud

Never attempt to deceive, misrepresent something, intentionally pervert the truth, or pretend to be someone else for the purpose of trying to get something valuable.

Scam

Be on your guard against scams of all kinds.

Smuggling

According to the article in this section:

A Houston truck driver was recently convicted by a jury on charges related to a human smuggling attempt discovered by U.S. Border Patrol agents. …

Balladares-Prado is scheduled for sentencing on September 3, 2025. He faces up to five years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine.

Never ever transport people made in the image of God as if they were cattle or cargo — no matter how large of an incentive you’ve been offered.

Theft

Never take something that doesn’t belong to you unless you have permission from the owner.

With as much surveillance equipment as is in place in the 21st century, it’s only a matter of time before the thieves are apprehended.

Violence

It is never right to perpetrate violence upon someone in an unprovoked manner.

All perpetrators of violence must be dealt with in a just legal manner.

6. Regarding congestion, containers, and intermodal:

Congestion

From a freedom point of view, I wonder how many people who live in Connecticut are driving less based on preference, not pressure.

And is there some kind of workaround that has been put in its place?

Containers

Intermodal

7. Regarding CDL, documentary, mail, training, truckers, and trucking:

CDLs

Documentary

Mail

This section deals with mail in Canada.

8. Regarding disaster-proofing, fires, and weather:

Disaster-proofing

Fires

It seems to me that there are a lot more truck fires than there used to be and I wonder if that is because more electric trucks with lithium batteries are in use.

Weather

Please be aware of the weather as you travel and make adjustments as necessary for speed or the need to park safely until a storm passes over.

9. Regarding maintenance, operations, and parking:

Maintenance

Operations

The second article in this section says:

More than 100 truckers who illegally bypassed weigh stations in Oregon were put out of service in a special enforcement effort. …

Of those drivers stopped, 122, or 25%, were placed out-of-service, meaning they were temporarily prohibited from driving a commercial vehicle due to a violation of safety or regulatory rules.

Parking

A quote from the first article in this section:

“I believe that we have now discovered the reason for their arrival. The TA travel stop downtown closed last year and the trucks have no designated place to go. They are now parking where they can by interstate entrances for their breaks. I will post when I have the results of traffic enforcement’s findings. We definitely need a permanent fix…“

10. Regarding politics, tariffs, trade, and Trump:

Politics

Tariffs

You may see all results from searching for “tariffs” on this website.

12. Regarding anniversary, awards, and recognition:

Anniversary

In this day and age when numerous trucking companies have been shut down or declared bankruptcy, it is refreshing to read of a company that has reached a big anniversary!

This is not an endorsement, just a congratulations!

Awards

Congratulations to all truckers who have:

  • demonstrated skill and achievement in their work as professional truck drivers;
  • been given a tangible reward; or
  • been nominated for or given an award.

Here are articles about some of the most recent truckers who have been awarded:

Recognition

Thank you to everyone who helped out their fellow human beings in a time of need, whether it was the trucker doing the helping or the trucker being helped.

I wish you — and all professional truck drivers — safe travels and lots of money saving opportunities on the road.
