Having a pet such as a dog come along with you when travelling can be good fun and will provide you with company, but just like kids, dogs will get bored! A bored dog will make the trip very stressful for both of you.
Ensure that your dog does like to travel. A dog that hesitates in getting into your vehicle, gets apprehensive when driving or suffers from motion sickness is probably better off at home.

Thanks, Giovanni.
Drivers, how do you keep your pet occupied — that is, not bored — while you’re driving? What other tips on dog travel (or pet travel) can you provide, especially money saving tips?

I take along a couple of tennis balls and other rubber toys for my mutt to destroy. It keeps him occupied for hours at a time.
