Response from Vicki:

Thank you for asking this question about paying for refilled empty water jugs from water vending machines.

Although there are warnings about reusing containers from other beverages, we have always used sturdier [emptied, thoroughly cleaned and rinsed] apple juice jugs for obtaining refill water at water vending machines. Therefore, we have no experience in handling this issue with the flimsier milk-jug-style refill containers.

If you go to a store with a water vending machine — with empty jug(s) in hand — you would be wise to ask the greeter or customer service representative ahead of time how you can be sure to be charged only for the cost of the water you are buying. Marking through the label and bar code with a permanent marker before entering the store may help.

Be aware that the clerk may have to look up the bar code or number associated with the cost of a refill only on a laminated sheet in order to process your purchase.

Please let us know how this goes for you the next time you get refill water.

If you are a professional truck driver, we wish you safe travels and lots of money saving opportunities on the road.

Best regards,
Vicki Simons
