UK recruitment agency Milestone Operations is offering free CPC to all new drivers at their Chepstow and Portbury Sites as of 25th November 2012 until 31st January 2013. Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is a new EU legislation requiring all drivers to undertake the CPC course by September 2014. The course is aimed at improving the knowledge and skills of HGV drivers to ensure safer driving on roads. It is required that drivers go through 35 hours of training every 5 years. There is no fixed cost for CPC – it depends on the training provider you use, but on average you can expect to pay minimum £250 for the required 35 hours.
Milestone has recently undertaken a survey on CPC with 172 drivers – 30% of drivers have not yet started their CPC. The worry is that there will be a shortfall of drivers 2014 with 8% of drivers not planning to take the CPC at all. And some drivers temporarily unavailable as they have not completed the course in time – offering CPC as part of employment will guarantee that there are still enough drivers when the legislation comes into place.
The survey showed that 42% of drivers have not begun the CPC course yet due to expense, therefore by offering CPC Milestone are giving something of financial value to drivers. The penalty for driving without CPC after September 2014 is £1000.
