TDMST Weekly Round-Up 2025.06.07

TDMST Weekly Round-Up 2025.06.07 is the trucking commentary on news affecting professional truck drivers for the week ending June 7, 2025, written by Vicki Simons.

I welcome your comments, thoughts and feedback on the items of your choice below.

TDMST Weekly Round-Up

1. Regarding complaint database and regulations:

Complaint database

According to the first article in this section:

DAT TruckersEdge - Most Loads. Best Rates. Serving Owner-Operators Since 1978. 10% off your first 12 months. New customers only.

The National Consumer Complaint Database is a place for truck drivers and others to file complaints to FMCSA about coercion, fraud and unsafe practices. Over the years, that database has been criticized for its lack of response to the complaints and its misleading name.

… Testifying in front of the Senate Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, Freight, Pipelines and Safety in February, Pugh said that the National Consumer Complaint Database has been unhelpful to truckers in the fight against cargo theft and freight fraud.

Articles on this topic this week include:

Regulations

According to the second article in this section:

In a major move to streamline the regulatory landscape for the trucking industry, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced a proposal to eliminate or revise nearly two dozen federal trucking regulations.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized the need for these reforms in a May 29 statement, asserting that, “Big government has been a big failure.” He added, “We’re slashing duplicative and outdated regulations that waste taxpayer dollars and do not improve safety.”

OK, serious question: Since the changes to the Hours of Service Regulations and the ELD mandate were both made purportedly to improve safety — and they haven’t — when are these going to be rolled back? Hmm…

2. Regarding inspections, language, legal, and politics:

Inspections

If you keep yourself and your rig in perpetual readiness for an inspection, you’ll never be caught off-guard.

Language

According to the first article in this section:

U.S. Rep. Dave Taylor (R-Ohio) has introduced “Connor’s Law,” a piece of legislation that would codify President Trump’s Executive Order requiring truck drivers to maintain a basic English language proficiency (ELP) in order to be licensed to drive on American roads.

While it is commendable that President Trump has taken prompt action on this, from a constitutional viewpoint, he does not have the authority to take this action — and it is disturbing that Congress has not been nearly as responsive.

For that matter, it is disturbing that state legislatures have not been proactive in this matter.

Some people in states that border Mexico might not want this requirement in place, but it is important that all drivers — especially professional truck drivers — be able to read, write, and speak in a country’s language before driving there.

Politics

3. Regarding Canada, tariffs, trade, Trump, and Wyoming:

Canada

Tariffs

According to this article, Musk says Trump tariffs ‘will cause a recession’ later this year:

Musk’s discontent with the president comes shortly after his exit from the administration last week. Later, he sounded the alarm, arguing that the [“The Big Beautiful Bill”] budget bill would increase the national deficit. In another X post on Tuesday, he called the bill “a disgusting abomination.”

Then on Thursday, Musk stated on his social media platform X that Trump’s tariffs “will cause a recession in the second half of this year.”

Measures of the economy include:

  • the price of silver;
  • rates for containers (see the section below); and
  • employment (see the section below).

Articles in this section:

Trade

In my opinion, there’s a big difference between a trade deficit and the cost of goods affected by tariffs.

For a much better and more thorough explanation about the problems with Trump-issued tariffs, please see this list of resources from Peggy Hall and then search for the word “tariffs”.

Trump

Every elected official must be held accountable to his the document that he/she took an oath of office to uphold and abide by.

Wyoming

Why is this dragging on so long?

4. Regarding BOI, border, business, recalls, repairs, and Walmart:

BOI

According to the article in this section:

“Forcing owner-operators and independent truckers to comply with BOI reporting requirements would unlikely root out significant criminal activity but instead add another disruptive layer of regulatory red tape along with excessive compliance costs for America’s small businesses,” OOIDA wrote.

Agreed.

Border

Business

Recalls

If your tractor or trailer is under a recall, please have the work attended to as soon as possible.

Repairs

Walmart

Originally planned to be under the “Economy” section of this trucking commentary, we see this article:

Walmart CFO Says Shoppers Remain Focused on Food, Essentials.

I think that this is the beginning of what is to come regarding the backlash from the increase on tariffs.

5. Regarding alcohol, crashes, deaths, drugs, fatalities, fatigue, fraud, staged, theft, thrown, and violence:

Alcohol

Never ever consume alcohol — or use an alcohol-containing product (such as mouthwash) — before beginning to drive a commercial motor vehicle!

Crashes

Please look through these articles to see if there is anything you can learn to help you prevent being involved in a similar crash.

Deaths

I express my deep sympathy — and offer my condolences — to the families of those whose loved ones died, as reported in these articles.

Drugs

Never ever haul or take illegal drugs.

Fatalities

I express my deep sympathy — and offer my condolences — to the families of those whose loved ones died in these crashes.

Can you learn anything from the articles below that would help prevent being involved in a fatal large truck crash?

Fatigue

According to an article from the FMCSA last updated on Wednesday, February 11, 2015:

Fatigue is the result of physical or mental exertion that impairs performance.46 Driver fatigue may be due to a lack of adequate sleep, extended work hours, strenuous work or non-work activities, or a combination of other factors.14 The Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) reported that 13 percent of commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers were considered to have been fatigued at the time of their crash.15

(The numbers in the quote are references found here.)

If this is such a big deal, why does the FMCSA/DOT issue exemptions to the Hours of Service regulations in so-called “emergencies” that allows them to drive for longer periods of time? Hmm…

Fraud

Never attempt to deceive, misrepresent something, intentionally pervert the truth, or pretend to be someone else for the purpose of trying to get something valuable.

Staged

I wonder when this whole situation is going to be wrapped up.

It seems like it is taking an incredibly long period of time to conclude.

The Seventh Amendment to The Constitution of the United States says:

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.

Just saying.

Theft

Never take something that doesn’t belong to you unless you have permission from the owner.

With as much surveillance equipment as is in place in the 21st century, it’s only a matter of time before the thieves are apprehended.

Thrown

Previously, this topic was covered on this website:

Items Thrown From Overpasses Smash Windshields and Hurt Truckers

So please be on your guard.

Violence

It is never right to perpetrate violence upon someone in an unprovoked manner.

All perpetrators of violence must be dealt with in a just legal manner.

6. Regarding bridges, containers, ports, and roads:

Bridges

According to the “2025 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure” from InfrastructureReportCard.org:

There are more than 623,000 bridges across the country, of which 49.1% are in “fair” condition, 44.1% are in “good” condition, and 6.8% are in “poor” condition.

Also, the Francis Scott Key bridge was destroyed last year and another bridge was recently hit, too!

Containers

According to the first article in this section:

The pause in the tariff fight that amounted to a trade embargo between China and the United States has seen a marked increase in container shipping rates, particularly on trans-Pacific routes.

… This surge can be attributed to the looming deadline for a trade agreement, set for Aug. 14, and the potential for increased tariffs if negotiations falter. The anticipation of heightened tariffs has led to a rush among shippers to import goods before the deadline, consequently driving up rates sharply this week.

There are numerous resources online to help track container rates.

8. Regarding autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles, emissions, fuel, and oil:

Autonomous vehicles

I vociferously oppose the operation of autonomous, driverless, or self-driving commercial motor vehicles on the same roads as the motoring public — but I share articles on this topic with our readers to help us stay current on the topic.

Electric vehicles

Before you buy an all-electric Commercial Motor Vehicle, please do your due diligence by asking some questions and getting answers.

Truckers

The first article in this section is a poll on the topic:
“Drivers Poll: What’s your biggest day-to-day frustration that makes you consider leaving?”

The top two results (representing over 2/3 of the votes cast) gathered here after 211 votes had been counted:

  • Delays at shippers/receivers: 41.71% (88 votes)
  • Not feeling appreciated or respected: 25.12% (53 votes)

12. Regarding awards and recognition:

Awards

Congratulations to all truckers who have:

  • demonstrated skill and achievement in their work as professional truck drivers;
  • been given a tangible reward; or
  • been nominated for or given an award.

Here are articles about some of the most recent truckers who have been awarded:

Recognition

Thank you to everyone who helped out their fellow human beings in a time of need, whether it was the trucker doing the helping or the trucker being helped.

I wish you — and all professional truck drivers — safe travels and lots of money saving opportunities on the road.
