TDMST Weekly Round-Up

1. Regarding shutdown, tariffs, and trade:

Shutdown

On my personal Facebook profile, I asked the question:

DAT TruckersEdge - Most Loads. Best Rates. Serving Owner-Operators Since 1978. 10% off your first 12 months. New customers only.

“Who hurts the most when the federal government shuts down?”

There are so many unconstitutional agencies, bureaus, commissions, departments, etc., a lot of which are listed here:
A-Z index of U.S. government departments and agencies

Are you aware that nowhere in The Constitution of the United States is transportation ever listed?

Transportation is a state issue!

So, I wonder what would happen if we scaled down and eliminated these unconstitutional parts of the federal government:

  • U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT);
  • Federal Highway Administration (FHWA);
  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA);
  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); and
  • National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Did I miss any?

Please comment below to share your thoughts. Thanks.

Tariffs

For a much better and more thorough explanation about the problems with Trump-issued tariffs, please search for the word “tariffs” in Peggy Hall’s Substack archive.

Trade

2. Regarding ICE, language, legal, and politics:

ICE

“ICE” stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Language

I am so glad that these issues regarding professional truck drivers are coming to light:

  • must be in the USA legally; and
  • must be able to read, write, and speak English.

Now, the question: What percentage of truck crashes and fatalities will disappear once illegal aliens posing as truckers are removed from big trucks?

Legal

Politics

3. Regarding alcohol, crashes, drugs, fatalities, fraud, road rage, theft, and wire:

Alcohol

Never ever consume alcohol — or use an alcohol-containing product (such as mouthwash) — before beginning to drive a commercial motor vehicle!

Crashes

Please look through these articles to see if there is anything you can learn to help you prevent being involved in a similar crash.

Drugs

Never ever haul or take illegal drugs.

Fatalities

I express my deep sympathy — and offer my condolences — to the families of those whose loved ones died in these crashes.

Can you learn anything from the articles below that would help prevent being involved in a fatal large truck crash?

Fraud

Never attempt to deceive, misrepresent something, intentionally pervert the truth, or pretend to be someone else for the purpose of trying to get something valuable.

Road rage

Seek to avoid road rage incidents.

Theft

Never take something that doesn’t belong to you unless you have permission from the owner.

With as much surveillance equipment as is in place in the 21st century, it’s only a matter of time before the thieves are apprehended.

Wire

Yes, one person’s actions can harm others!

4. Regarding autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles, emissions, fire, fuel, and oil:

Autonomous vehicles

I most vociferously oppose the operation of autonomous, self-driving, or driverless commercial motor vehicles on the same roads as the motoring public — but I share articles on this topic with our readers to help us stay current on the topic.

Electric vehicles

Before you buy an all-electric Commercial Motor Vehicle, please do your due diligence by asking some questions and getting answers.

Emissions

Fire

Fuel

Oil

5. Regarding border, brokers, business, cold, containers, history, and recalls:

Border

Brokers

Business

Cold

Containers

History

Recalls

If your tractor or trailer is under a recall, please have the work attended to as soon as possible.

6. Regarding bridges, congestion, inspections, and ports:

Bridges

Why is the construction of the replacement Francis Scott Key Bridge taking so long?

Congestion

The article in this section says:

CTDOT said in a press release that after reviewing and analyzing potential options and breakout projects, the CTDOT has determined that a Flex Lane concept, which uses the median shoulder as a temporary travel lane, will be the first project advancing to alleviate traffic and improve safety during peak travel times. Design is underway, with construction anticipated to start in 2028.

What do you think about this?

Have you ever heard of a “flex lane” before?

Inspections

If you keep yourself and your rig in perpetual readiness for an inspection, you’ll never be caught off-guard.

Ports

7. Regarding economy, employment, fines, inflation, pay, rates, recruitment, strike, surcharges, and tax deductions:

Economy

Employment

Fines

Inflation

As I mentioned on September 20,

A better gauge [of inflation], I think is the price of an ounce of silver, a precious metal that is one of two precious metals mentioned in Article I, Section 10, of The Constitution of the United States:

“No State shall… make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts.”

As of this writing, in the last 12 months, the price of silver has risen from under $29 per ounce to over $43 per ounce.

Well, the spot price of one ounce of silver closed on Friday, October 3, 2025 at $47.92!

That’s over an 11% increase in just 2 weeks! Yikes!

Pay

Rates

Recruitment

Strike

Surcharges

The subtitle of this article is:

Raising fees when demand is tepid undermines customer trust, analysts say

Tax deductions

8. Regarding ELDs, load board, maintenance, and placards:

ELDs

The part of the article in this section regarding Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) says:

FMCSA will take a tougher approach on vetting ELD provider companies for adherence to standards/data manipulation capabilities.

It’s past time for this! ELDs were made mandatory in 2017 (link 1, link 2, link 3)!

Load board

Maintenance

Placards

Regulations

9. Regarding health, operations, parking, routing, and safety:

Health

Operations

Parking

Routing

In case you thought it was “no big deal” if you wandered off an approved truck route, see this:

Driver fined over $2000 after getting stuck on Smugglers Notch

Yes, that’s expensive and it is so easily prevented:

Please never, ever ignore signs or follow a GPS unit made for a car!

Safety

10. Regarding statistics, technology, testing, and training:

11. Regarding truck stops, trucks, weather, and white papers:

12. Regarding awards:

Awards

Congratulations to every professional truck driver who qualifies to be in a truck driving championship — and to those who win a prize!

Thanks to others who have recognized and/or rewarded professional truck drivers for their hard work and achievements!

I wish you — and all professional truck drivers — safe travels and lots of money saving opportunities on the road.
