This “Fuel Island Review Pilot North Carolina Dunn” is a review of the fuel island at the Pilot Travel Center in Dunn, NC, USA.
Note:
This review is being conducted based upon our own expectations of what a fuel island that caters to professional truck drivers of commercial motor vehicles should be like. Mike’s driver manager at his trucking company has said that the company wants feedback from their drivers regarding their fuel solutions (locations where they are assigned to get fuel). If the drivers have a bad experience, they are to report that and if the company receives enough bad reports about a particular fueling location, the company will look for alternatives. In this way, there is an economic incentive for truck stops to provide what drivers need and want when they arrive at a fueling location.
For our review, we are choosing to assign a number to each aspect of the fuel island experience:
- “5” is excellent;
- “4” is very good;
- “3” is average or ok;
- “2” is unsatisfactory and needs attention;
- “1” is poor and needs immediate corrective action; and
- “N/A” means not applicable.
We are choosing not to identify a specific bay because we figure that what goes at one bay at a facility will generally be true at all of them.

Photos: “Fuel Island Review Pilot North Carolina Dunn” This fuel island experience was so unsatisfactory that Mike felt compelled to take a couple of photos because, as they say, “a picture is worth a thousands words.”
The broken and empty paper towel dispenser at a fuel bay at the Pilot Travel Center in Dunn, NC, on Thursday, June 10, 2010. For what it’s worth, Mike went to another fuel bay near his and found the paper towel dispenser empty there, too! Regular maintenance had not been done here prior to Mike’s visit.
The dirty, oily, and ill-kempt area between fuel islands — showing a bucket with no wash water for washing windshields, a pole without a squeegee on it, and trash on the ground — at a fuel bay at the Pilot Travel Center in Dunn, NC, on Thursday, June 10, 2010. Mike describes his feeling about visiting this particular truck stop as “get in and get out as quickly as possible.” Because of his fuel island experience, this truck stop did not earn any of his personal business.

Observations about exit: “Fuel Island Review Pilot North Carolina Dunn”
The space in front of the fuel bays at this travel center is too short for drivers of conventional tractors pulling 53′ trailers to pull up and allow others to easily exit the facility onto the road. Drivers who are exiting from any bays other than the ones directly in front of the exit must be very careful not to hit other trucks pulled up after fueling or hit the ditch or pole when moving out onto the road. This was short-sighted of the group responsible for laying out the design of this travel plaza. For the purpose of this fuel island review, however, we did not take it into grading consideration. Perhaps Pilot will do so in the future?
