TDMST Weekly Round-Up 2025.02.15 is the trucking commentary on news affecting professional truck drivers for the week ending February 15, 2025, written by Vicki Simons.

I welcome your comments, thoughts and feedback on the items of your choice below.

TDMST Weekly Round-Up

1. Regarding tariffs and weather:

Tariffs

Once again, a significant number of articles regarding tariffs were published within the last week or so.

DAT TruckersEdge - Most Loads. Best Rates. Serving Owner-Operators Since 1978. 10% off your first 12 months. New customers only.

As I mentioned last week, please feel free to read the February 6, 2025, article by Judge Andrew Napolitano, entitled “Tariffs and the Constitution.”

Weather

Please be aware that weather conditions can change rapidly, especially in the winter.

Heed all truck travel bans that apply to the class of truck you drive.

Also, even if the FMCSA issues some kind of waiver or exemption during extreme weather, do not feel compelled to drive outside the standard Hours of Service regulations if you are tired.

2. Regarding bankruptcy, employment, shortage, and shut down:

Bankruptcy

The articles in this section may be closely related to those in the “shut down” section below.

Recalls

If your tractor or trailer is under a recall, please have the work attended to as soon as possible.

Regulations

4. Regarding chickens and theft:

Chickens

This section has to do with chickens, eggs, the price of eggs, etc.

Theft

Never take something that doesn’t belong to you unless you have permission from the owner.

With as much surveillance equipment in place in the 21st century, it’s only a matter of time before the thieves are apprehended.

5. Regarding congested and roads:

Congested

One definition says: “A bottleneck is a point of congestion, or a place where traffic or progress is slowed or stopped.”

This section of articles has to do with ATRI’s annual list of the 100 most congested bottlenecks.

Roads

We depend on roads to be open and in good condition.

6. Regarding crashes, drugs, DUI, fatalities, fires, and fraud:

Crashes

Please look through these articles to see if there is anything you can learn to help you prevent being involved in a similar crash.

Drugs

Never ever haul or take illegal drugs.

DUI

Never ever consume/use products containing alcohol prior to driving a commercial motor vehicle.

Fatalities

I express my deep sympathy — and offer my condolences — to the families of those whose loved ones died in these crashes.

Can you learn anything from the articles below that would help prevent being involved in a fatal large truck crash?

Fires

It seems to me that there are more truck and truck stop fires than their used to be.

Or perhaps it is the case that the fires are being reported in a more timely fashion than they used to be.

Personally, I think that part of the reason may stem from lithium batteries catching fire.

Fraud

Never attempt to deceive, misrepresent something, intentionally pervert the truth, or pretend to be someone else for the purpose of trying to get something valuable.

7. Regarding autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles, emissions, fuel, fuel – DEF, fuel cards, hydrogen, and oil:

Autonomous vehicles

I very strongly oppose the operation of autonomous, self-driving commercial, or driverless motor vehicles on the same roads as the motoring public — but I share articles on this topic with our readers to help us stay current on the topic.

Electric vehicles

Before you buy an all-electric Commercial Motor Vehicle, please do your due diligence by asking some questions and getting answers.

9. Regarding inspections, low clearance, operations, parking, railroad crossing, safety, and snow plow:

Inspections

If you keep yourself and your rig in perpetual readiness for an inspection, you’ll never be caught off-guard.

Low clearance

You may wish to read these posts on my website:

Remember that low clearance crashes are always preventable!

Now for the article:

Operations

There is a large truck operations section on this site.

Parking

Railroad crossing

There are at least two kinds of problems that truckers get into when it comes to crossing railroad tracks:

  • trying to get across the tracks before an oncoming train arrives (aka attempting to “beat a train” so that they don’t have to wait for the train to cross in front of them); and
  • getting stuck when the trailer or landing gear cannot clear elevated train tracks (aka being called “high-centered”).

A video shows a train hitting a truck stuck on a railroad track.

You may wish to read the post:
Railroad Crossing Accident Prevention for Semi Tractor Trailers.

For your convenience:

Here’s the recent article:

Safety

Snow plow

Never attempt to pass a snow plow!

12. Regarding recognition:

Recognition

I recognize those people who helped their fellow human beings in a time of need.

Thank you, one and all!

I wish you — and all professional truck drivers — safe travels and lots of money saving opportunities on the road.
