TDMST Weekly Round-Up 2023.05.06

This is the TDMST Weekly Round-Up of news affecting professional truck drivers, written by Vicki Simons for the week ending May 6, 2023.

We welcome your comments, thoughts and feedback on the items of your choice below.

TDMST Weekly Round-Up

1. Regarding FedEx, employment, satisfaction, supply chain, trucker, vaccines:

Fedex

On December 10, 2022, I wrote a post on this site entitled “Truck Driver Furlough,” in which I questioned the announcement by FedEx, about which I had read on November 30.

DAT TruckersEdge - Most Loads. Best Rates. Serving Owner-Operators Since 1978. 10% off your first 12 months. New customers only.

I stated my observations and asked a lot of questions.

Although it does not give me any joy in this situation, my intuition was accurate.

I hope and pray that the FedEx Freight truckers who worked out of the slated-to-be-closed facilities will be able to find the kind of work they need and want.

Employment

Sometimes employment definitions and statistics are written in such a way as to make them sound like good news when they really aren’t.

Please do your due diligence in this matter.

Satisfaction

Supply chain

Trucker

Vaccines

Please see my previous trucking commentaries regarding the so-called C0V!D-19 p@ndemic and the false premise for the “need” to get j@bbed in order to keep one’s job, travel, etc.

It is far better, in my opinion, to boost one’s God-given immune system than pump unproven, untested, and man-made chemicals into one’s body.

2. Regarding accidents, fatalities, violations, violence:

Accidents

Please review these articles to see how you can avoid being involved in a similar accident.

Fatalities

We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of those who passed away.

Please review these articles to see if you can glean any nuggets about how to avoid being involved in a fatal situation as a trucker.

Violations

Performing thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections will help you to avoid equipment-related violations.

Do not think that you can escape problems when you deliberately drive on a closed road.

Violence

Do everything that is reasonable to avoid violence as a trucker.

3. Regarding electric vehicles, emissions, batteries, autonomous vehicles:

Electric vehicles

If you are considering buying an electric commercial motor vehicle, please do your due diligence first.

Emissions

While we all want clean air to breathe, some entities may attempt to hold us hostage to their unrealistic demands.

Please do your due diligence on this matter.

Batteries

Autonomous vehicles

I most vigorously oppose the operation of autonomous, self-driving, or driverless commercial motor vehicles on the same roads as the motoring public, but share these articles as a courtesy to help you stay current on the topic.

4. Regarding auction, business, idling, leasing, pay, pricing, savings:

Auction

Business

Idling

Leasing

Pay

We do not necessarily recommend or endorse any companies referred to in this section.

Pricing

Savings

5. Regarding fuel: clean, diesel, fuel cell, gasoline, generator, hydrogen, price, renewable, RNG; fuel card; fuel economy:

Fuel: clean

Please do your due diligence regarding any fuel that is labeled as “clean.”

What makes it “clean” when compared to other forms of fuel and is the sourcing of that fuel just as “clean” as the fuel itself?

Diesel

Fuel cell

Gasoline

Generator

Hydrogen

Price

Renewable

RNG

Fuel card

Fuel economy

6. Regarding detour, roads, safety, securement, training:

7. Regarding independent, politics, seizures:

8. Regarding ELDs, speed limiters, testing, technology:

Technology

9. Regarding cargo, international, fleets, loyalty, parking:

Cargo

International

Fleets

The last article in the section just above states:

America’s $875 billion trucking industry is struggling.

The number of authorized interstate trucking fleets in the U.S. declined by nearly 9,000 in the first quarter of 2023, according to federal data analyzed by Motive, a fleet management technology company.

The first section in this trucking commentary proves that even large trucking companies are closing some locations.

Before you hire on with any trucking company, ask for some proof that they have enough contracts to keep you loaded and rolling.

Loyalty

Parking

10. Regarding economy, inflation, theft, tolls:

Economy

Inflation

Theft

To help prevent cargo theft, please see these resources on our website:

Tolls

11. Regarding inspections, drugs, smuggling:

Inspections

If you keep yourself and your truck in perpetual readiness for an inspection, you’ll never be caught off-guard.

Drugs

Never ever haul illegal drugs, no matter how big of a payout you may be promised!

Smuggling

Never ever haul people like you would cargo or cattle, no matter how large of a treasure you’ve been promised!

12. Regarding awards and recognition:

Awards

We applaud those professional truck drivers who have demonstrated skill and safety on the job!

Being as how it is only the first part of May 2023, I think it is a bit early to be naming a “driver of the year,” but so be it.

Recognition

We recognize those truckers who helped out their fellow human beings in a time of need.

My husband Mike and I wish you — and all professional truck drivers — safe travels and lots of money saving opportunities on the road.
