TDMST Weekly Round-Up 2024.11.16 is the trucking commentary on news affecting professional truck drivers for the week ending November 16, 2024, written by Vicki Simons.

I welcome your comments, thoughts and feedback on the items of your choice below.

TDMST Weekly Round-Up

1. Regarding congestion pricing, downgrades, low clearance, roads, and routing:

Congestion pricing

According to the fourth article in this section:

DAT TruckersEdge - Most Loads. Best Rates. Serving Owner-Operators Since 1978. 10% off your first 12 months. New customers only.

A plan to charge truckers and other motorists a toll to drive in the busiest part of New York City is back on after having been halted in June.

Some detail:

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul Thursday announced the congestion pricing plan would be implemented early next year, but at prices reduced from the original plan. The plan is meant to reduce traffic congestion below 60th Street, limit air pollution, and also raise money for the city’s mass transit system.

I am laughing because the only way to “reduce traffic congestion,” in my opinion, is to:

  • either push congestion to other times around the clock, which could effectively make the plan backfire;
  • or simply get rid of people or their vehicles, the results of which will reduce the tax base altogether, thus also making the plan to “raise money” backfire.

I am glad that the Trucking Association of New York has “renewed its considerable opposition to the plan…”!

Downgrades

I’ve been reporting about this for weeks now and it appears as though we’re right on the doorframe of action.

Do you see the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse to be a good thing or a bad thing?

Please comment through the form below.

Low clearance

In order to help truckers avoid this kind of problem, I have written these posts:

I congratulate the trucker who stopped his rig before he struck a low clearance, but I believe that more should have been done to prevent his even getting to that point!

Roads

Routing

Please be aware of detours and do not take a big rig on a route that is not meant for Commercial Motor Vehicles.

4. Regarding border, business, language, and leasing:

Border

Business

Language

I am totally opposed to any state making it easy for people to take CDL permit training in other languages.

Why?

To the best of my knowledge, all signage in the USA is in English.

Hence, professional truck drivers need to be trained and tested in English.

In my opinion, if a trucking student can’t pass a test in English, he/she should not be allowed to have a CDL in the USA. Period!

Leasing

5. Regarding crashes, drugs, fatalities, fire, fraud, scam, smuggling, theft, and violence:

Crashes

Please look through these articles to see if there is anything you can learn to help you prevent being involved in a similar crash.

Drugs

Never ever haul or take illegal drugs.

Fatalities

I express my deep sympathy — and offer my condolences — to the families of those whose loved ones died in these crashes.

Can you learn anything from the articles below that would help prevent being involved in a fatal large truck crash?

Fire

Fraud

Never attempt to deceive, misrepresent something, intentionally pervert the truth, or pretend to be someone else for the purpose of trying to get something valuable.

Scam

It is distressing to learn that truckers (or anyone) is the target of a scam.

Please see these resources to help you avoid them.

If something sounds or feels fishy, do some investigation first!

Smuggling

Never ever transport people made in the image of God as if they were cattle or cargo — no matter how large of an incentive you’ve been offered.

Theft

Never take something that doesn’t belong to you unless you have permission from the owner.

With as much surveillance equipment in place in the 21st century, it’s only a matter of time before the thieves are apprehended.

Violence

It is never right to perpetrate violence upon someone in an unprovoked manner.

All perpetrators of violence must be dealt with in a just legal manner.

6. Regarding autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles, emissions, fuel, hydrogen, and oil:

Autonomous vehicles

With every fiber of my being, I oppose the operation of self-driving, autonomous, or driverless commercial motor vehicles on the same roads as the motoring public — but I share articles on this topic with my readers to help us stay current on the topic.

Electric vehicles

Before you buy an all-electric Commercial Motor Vehicle, please do your due diligence by asking some questions and getting answers.

12. Regarding awards and recognition:

Awards

I congratulate this trucker for having driving safely for 4.5 million safe miles and wish her well in her retirement.

Recognition

These articles are about “Highway Hero Award” nominations and other recognition.

I am pleased to recognize truckers who helped their fellow human beings in a time of need — and recognize those who helped truckers in need.

Thanks!

I wish you — and all professional truck drivers — safe travels and lots of money saving opportunities on the road.
